Handicap Van

We recently bought a used 2020 Toyota Sienna handicap van for my husband who has ALS and Parkinson's. I have googled the Disability Tax Deduction for wheelchair vans. Will the forms and the information that I need to make this deduction be on the FreeTax USA website for me to fill in the information? We bought the van from an individual in Texas.

Thank you for joining our community, kcferg.

Our software does support the medical expense deduction. These medical expenses are an itemized deduction reported on Schedule A.

The total price of the vehicle will not be deductible. "You can include in medical expenses the difference between the cost of a regular car and a car specially designed to hold a wheelchair." 2023 Publication 502

Once you figure the difference between the cost of a regular car and the car you bought that was specially designed to hold a wheelchair, you can report that amount inside the software by going to "Deductions / Credits" > "Medical Expenses".

Additionally, "you can include in medical expenses the cost of special hand controls and other special equipment installed in a car for the use of a person with a disability."
