How do I know if I need for file my LLC? I haven't made any revenue yet, and I'm not planning on trying to tax any deductions. Do I still need to enter it when I file?

Thank you!

This comes up a lot, so you’re not alone. In general, just forming an LLC doesn’t automatically mean you have to file a separate business tax return if nothing actually happened. If your LLC had no income, no expenses, and no business activity at all during the year, there’s often nothing to report. For a single-member LLC, the IRS treats it as a “disregarded entity,” so it only shows up on your personal return if there’s activity to report. That said, some states still require an annual report or minimum fee just to keep the LLC active, even with zero revenue. It’s worth checking your state rules to avoid penalties. When in doubt, a quick chat with a tax professional can save headaches later.

It’s also important to separate tax filing from compliance filings. Even if the IRS doesn’t require anything because there was no activity, your state or local authority might still expect a zero report, franchise tax, or annual statement. Missing those can lead to late fees or administrative dissolution without much warning. Another thing people overlook is bank accounts or licenses tied to the LLC, which can sometimes trigger reporting obligations on their own. Keeping simple records showing there was no activity is smart too, just in case questions come up later.
