When you are working on your tax return with NC as your state of residence, then FreeTaxUSA will calculate how much tax you will owe to NC based on your income and filing circumstances. You will know how much you owe in state taxes before you file your tax return.

You should still file your taxes on time even if you owe and cannot pay. You can pay as much as you can toward the balances owed, and then set up the installment agreement with the State of NC here: https://www.ncdor.gov/paymentagreements There are steps before the state installment agreement can be set up, but you can set up an installment agreement to pay the state taxes at an agreed payment amount.

You should then contact your employer to update the state of residency and have NC state taxes withheld going forward.
