1099-R Backdoor Roth

Hello,

I'm working on my tax filing and just entered my 1099-R and I'm stuck on the following question:

"Is this 1099-R a rollover from a 401(k), 403(b), or governmental 457(b) plan to a designated Roth 401(k), 403(b), or 457(b) plan?"

This rollover was an in-service rollover within the same plan from an "After Tax" Savings account my employer offers to the same employers roth 401k account. It's all within the same plan, so I didn't know if that would make the answer yes. Or because the after tax isn't technically a 401k, it would be a no?

The 1099-R is labeled at a 'G'.

Thanks!

    Hi Taz,

Since box 7 is code G (direct rollover to a qualified plan), you should answer, YES to that question. That way you are not taxed on the rollover.

Just to confirm, it would still be yes, even though it never left my employer sponsored plan?

    Thanks!

    Hello Taz,

Yes, that is right. Since it is a qualified rollover with Code G. You may want to enter the 1099-R and contact Customer Support so they can review your account. It may not make any difference if you check Yes or No to the question and continue.
