Dependent

Hello, I accidentally filed my Son as a dependent and I was not supposed to as it is his dads year. As soon as he notified me of it I amended my return and it went from receiving a return to pay in. My amended return was accepted but today I received my original federal deposit.

What should I do? Will my Sons dad still be able to claim him. I feel bad I genuinely did not mean to.

    Hello Mom101,

Amendments take weeks to process, normally about 8-12 weeks although it can be more. That is probably why you got your original refund anyway. Since you amended, it will sort itself out eventually. You can use the refund to pay the taxes owed on the amendment.

You will need to let your ex-spouse know that they will likely need to mail in their return this year in order to claim your son. The IRS's e-filing system often doesn't update with amendments, so it will probably continue to reject their return.
