on my W-4, it says married filing jointly or qualifying, surviving spouse is this correct because my wife is not dead
just trying to make sure my filing status is correct don't want to owe at the end of the year
Hello AtticusParker33,
If you are planning on filing a joint return with your spouse, that is correct. The W-4 is to figure out how much taxes to withhold from your paychecks and a joint return and a surviving spouse have a higher standard deduction and lower tax rate.
One thing to keep in mind as you fill out the W-4 is you will want to account for other income. For example, if your wife has a job or if you have another job, you will want to account for that income so you have the right amount of taxes withheld.
Step 2 on the W-4 form goes over the different methods you can use to calculate that if it applies to you.
