Should I send an amended federal tax return?

I just completed my 2025 tax return only to discover days later that I forgot to submit 2 1099-DIVs (from the same company) the last two years (2024, 2025). I filled out an amended tax return and I don't owe anything on the federal level. Do I still send in the amended federal tax return or should I only send in state, where I do owe? I have not heard from the IRS regarding last year's omission (this year's hasn't been processed). Sorry if this is a dumb question.

    Hello Dollythedog,

I would recommend that you go ahead and file your federal amended return just so it is as accurate as possible with the IRS. But before you do, has your 2025 return finished processing? We recommend that you wait until you get your refund before amending because the IRS can catch errors like missing forms. If they do, they usually will reach out before processing your refund.

If you have gotten your refund and have not heard from the IRS, then it is okay to proceed with the amendment.

You should be able to track the status of your amended return here: https://www.irs.gov/filing/wheres-my-amended-return
