Is it really because of a review?

I filed my 2025 and 24hr later it showed received on the where's my refund website. About 4 or 5 days later i checked the website again to see if anything changed and to my surprise the boxes we're now greyed out and it said unavailable. Below a little ways it said to call and bring up code 9001 to the service rep. I did what it said and the lady took about 40 minutes trying to figure out the details of the code. She came back and told me that it's pretty much nothing just that i was the lucky one choosen for a review. And to call back if i haven't gotten my refund by March 2nd. which is 21 days. is it really a review because when i looked online about the code it says it's a glitch and or to make sure it's me something to that effect. I honestly thought it could be because i got both tax credits plus a credit from marketplace. please tell me your thoughts thanks in advance.

Hello Grape! I am sorry to hear of your difficulties. It is true that the IRS does select random returns for review. Returns that include credits like the Earned Income Credit, Child Tax Credit, or Marketplace (Premium Tax Credit) are sometimes subject to additional verification before the refund is released. This is fairly common and doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong.

One thing that may help is checking your IRS tax transcript at www.irs.gov. If you see transaction codes 570 (additional account action pending) or 971 (notice issued) on your transcript, that would confirm a hold is in place and that a letter may be on the way with instructions. If you do receive a letter, respond promptly to avoid further delays.

Following the IRS rep's advice to call back if you haven't received your refund by March 2nd is a reasonable plan. If you do call back, ask specifically whether there is a hold on your account and what, if anything, you need to provide.
