My husband and I live in 2 different states. Do I submit the federal taxes to the IRS first, then go back and do each state return individually? I am not sure the procedure to do this. I live in Maryland and my husband lives in Delaware

I am looking for a similar issue to be able to file only state returns online and not Federal. My federal is already filed and approved. I only need to file State electornic because paper in VA takes twice as long.

    Hello talonrph and StateTaxes,

Our software generally does not allow for separate filing statuses. So if you wish to use a different filing status for your state returns, you will need to create a new account to do so. For talonrph, you will need to create two more additional accounts, one for you and one for your husband. On each account, you will need to fill out one spouse's information as married filing separately. You will need to fill out the federal section again since the state return pulls information from the federal section before you start the state return.

Since we can only only e-file state returns if the federal return is e-filed on the same account, you will need to mail your state returns in. When you are finished, you can leave the federal return alone and print and mail the state return.
