PA Tax Form Not Indicating Deceased Status

Hello, My spouse passed away in February 2026, and I am filing a federal and state joint tax return for 2025. Under the personal information section of the federal tax section, I checked off that my spouse is deceased and indicated the date of death. My federal tax return is being calculated correctly and it is correctly indicating that I am filing as surviving spouse. However, my PA state tax form is not indicating the deceased status for my spouse, and I am unable to identify how I can rectify this. I assumed it would carry over from the federal form, but it does not appear to be doing so. According to the PA Department of Revenue website, I need to indicate the deceased status on this filing. Does anyone know how this can be adjusted in Free Tax USA to correctly reflect the deceased status?

Thank you for your time, it's appreciated.

    Hello CML213,

I am sorry for your loss. Yes, this information will carry forward to the PA State return. You can view this by selecting: State > PA State > and then select the second line option "Final Return."

On this screen, where it asks if this is the final return, select Yes. The box below will state: TAXPAYER DECEASED. On the first page of the PA state PA-40 form, right side column, code D will be typed next to Deceased.

Please reach out to our Support Team inside the account if you have any further questions, they can check how this is being reported on the PA return for you.
