My sister just e-filed her taxes and she didn't have to pay for her state returns, and she had to file both IL and IN. Why do I have to pay for mine? This is the first year I am filing taxes.

The only way to avoid paying for the state return is to access FreeTaxUSA (or one of the other IRS FreeFile partners) through the FreeFile program, and it only applies if you meet the eligibility requirements to use one of those products.

Hi dom,
That's a great question, and the previous response is exactly right! Your sister was likely able to file both state returns for free because she accessed FreeTaxUSA through the IRS Free File program, which includes free federal and state filing for those who qualify.
To use Free File, you'll need to meet the eligibility requirements (generally an AGI under $51,000, or active-duty military with an AGI under $89,000) and access our site through the Free File link. One important thing to know is that a brand new account must be created through that link — an existing account can't be switched over to Free File.
You can get started here: https://www.freetaxusa.com/freefile2025/
If you don't qualify for Free File or prefer to use your current account, federal filing is still free and state filing is available for a small fee.0
