I filed IL tax return with filing status- Married filing jointly, but need to amend it to Married filing separately and my husband will be a Non-resident for IL and I will be a resident for IL. My husband is a IN resident for 2025 and I received a Correction notice from IL that I need to amend the filing status and filing residency to avoid paying the additional IL state tax on his income.

The software is not allowing me to do this change. Please help. What do I need to do?

Thanks.

    Hi denitza,

When you amend a return, you generally cannot update the status from Married filing jointly to Married filing separately. What you will need to do is create a brand-new account, using married filing separate on your federal return and then prepare the IN return. Use the option to MAIL this return. Then print and mail the IN return with an explanation and a copy of the original wrong filing status.

If you have question, I recommend that you contact Customer Support so they can look at your account and get additional information.
