Double taxation; daughter lives in OR and worked as a field tech in CA

She's doing her taxes. According to Oregon state form, she owes Oregon $925. With the CA state, non-resident form, she gets back $457. We have read that she can get credit for the $925 for Oregon tax liability, but have no idea where to claim this. She's so frustrated she's willing to just pay — but I think there's more to this. We're both really confused about how to fill out the form(s) correctly. Looking for advise!

    Hello Farmgirl1961,

Typically, the Credit for Taxes Paid to Another State is entered on the resident return. However, since OR does not support the Credit for Taxes Paid to Another State when the income is from CA, you will enter this credit on the nonresident CA return.

To locate it in the software, select: State > CA > Credit for Taxes Paid to Another State

You can gather the information to enter there from the OR State Summary screen. If you need further assistance, please reach out to our Support Team inside your account.
