Filing state return separately after Federal return?

Hello. My W2 lists an incorrect state (where I neither live nor have worked)… While my employer sorts this mess out, is it possible that I file my federal return first? And once I have corrected info, I can then file my state return using the same freetaxusa account?

    Hello procrastinator1_0,

If you plan on filing your state return from the same account, I would recommend that you don't file the federal return first. The way our software works is we pull a lot of the information from the federal portion to fill out the state return and once you file your federal return, that portion is locked and you can't adjust it.

If you need more time to file your federal and state return, I would recommend that you file an extension. That will give you time to get that sorted out. Make sure that if you are owing taxes, you make a payment with the extension though. It does not give you more time to pay, just more time to file.
