My gf received a letter in the mail from the IRS about 34,000 she owes in back taxes over the last 5 years. She filed, but wasn’t able to pay. She called the IRS and she asked the agent if she could do a payment plan. The agent said yes and that the lowest payment they could accept was 936 a month until it was paid off. After doing the math, it would be for 36 months. She can’t afford to pay that much. The IRS agent said that was the lowest they could allow, or they would just garnish her wages if a payment plan was not put in place. After hearing that, I looked on the IRS website and it states if it’s less than 50,000 owed, an individual can have up to 72 months to pay, which would be 472 a month. Why would the IRS agent insist that the lowest payment per month would be 936 when my gf asked for a lower payment? I told her we should just apply online and see what the real answer is, but she is panicking.
