    Hi,

You can enter your information for the home office deduction in the 'Business Income' section of the 'Income' tab. When you get to the 'Your Business' page, select the 'Home Office Expenses' option. You will have the option to select the simplified method as you go through that section.

Are you a W-2 employee or self-employed? The home office deduction is only available to self-employed individuals.

you must use the space exclusively for your business. It can't be a "spare bedroom" that is utilized occasionally. It must be exclusive use. It's a very popular topic for review.

Can you tell if Tax software from Free Tax USA help us calculate or pre-fill freelancer deductions, like automatically calculating the deduction or credit amount, or pre-fills relevant tax forms or fields based on user data entry?

And I also want to know if tax software from Free Tax USA provides us information on income limits, contribution caps, or phase-outs, like the eligibility thresholds, such as income limits, maximum contribution amounts, or phase-out ranges that affect deductions/benefits for freelancer or self-employed ?

    Hello abby and Cookerquestion!

I can clarify both of your questions about FreeTaxUSA and how it handles freelancer/self‑employed tax situations.

    1. Income Limits, Contribution Caps, and Phase‑Out Ranges:
FreeTaxUSA does provide guidance and calculations for many tax benefits that have eligibility thresholds including income limits, maximum contribution amounts, and phase‑out ranges. The software uses your entries (income, filing status, age, etc.) to automatically check eligibility and apply the correct limits.

    For example:
    - Retirement contributions (Traditional IRA, Roth IRA): The software asks for your income and filing status, then calculates whether you qualify for a deduction or contribution, and applies the correct phase‑out rules.

    - Self‑Employed retirement plans (SEP IRA, SIMPLE IRA): The software calculates allowable contributions based on your net self‑employment income.

    - Credits and deductions: Such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit (CTC), and Qualified Business Income (QBI) deduction. All of these are calculated by the software based on the information entered. You can view the applicable worksheets to see the calculations.

    2. Automatic Calculation and Pre‑Filling for Freelancer/Self‑Employed Deductions:
FreeTaxUSA supports Schedule C and related self‑employment forms. If you have a home office, you can choose to take a simplified deduction or the regular method.

    Simplified Home Office Deduction:
    - Flat $5 per square foot, up to 300 sq. ft.
    - No need to track actual expenses: You don’t have to calculate utilities, rent, mortgage interest, insurance, or depreciation separately.
    - No depreciation recapture: If you sell your home later, you won’t have to recapture depreciation for the home office portion.
    - Often chosen by freelancers who want to avoid complex calculations.

    Regular Method:
    - You track actual expenses (utilities, rent/mortgage interest, repairs, insurance, depreciation).
    - Both direct and indirect expenses can be entered. The software will calculate any indirect expenses automatically based on the square footage you enter.

In FreeTaxUSA when you enter your home office information in the Schedule C section, you can choose which option you would prefer and the you will be walked through the process of entering your home office expenses.
