If you're a W-2 employee, you can't. At least not on your federal return. Employee business expenses have not been deductible since 2017. Your state may have different rules.

If you're self-employed, you may be able deduct them as a business expense on Schedule C.

The job expense deduction is only available to certain types of employees.

The employees that qualify to deduct unreimbursed job expenses are:

    • Armed Forces reservists
    • Qualified performing artists
    • Fee-basis state or local government officials
    • Employees with impairment-related work expenses

    Thank you for this post.

A Form 1099, or it could be a Form 1099-NEC, gets added as income to a Schedule C as Gross receipts. This is contractor or self-employed work. All common expenses such as uniform costs can be added to the Schedule C and deductible on a normal tax return.
