I hire independent contractors and need to issue them a 1099 NEC because it is over $600. How do I make a 1099 NEC and issue it to them? Also do I need to file it with the IRS?

Great question. Yes, the 1099-NEC will need to be filed with the IRS and a copy sent to your contractor. Keep in mind that you only need to send a 1099 if you have income producing business. As a private person, you do not need to send contactors a 1099.

Although the IRS has form 1099-NEC to fill out and file, the best way to handle this is to use an online service. You can create an account, fill in the form 1099-NEC and they will e-file the forms for you. You may have to print and mail the 1099s to your contractors, but you may find they can do that too.
