My wife and I are retired and we listed our ss income at around 50K but on the 1040 tax

form the taxable income on line 6b was listed as a lot less (under 7K. Any reason why???

Your Social Security is not all taxable. The taxable amount is based on how much other income you have.
Run your numbers through this IRS Interactive Tax Assistant to determine how much of your Social Security is taxable.
