PA Schedule G-L submission requirements

I live in PA but work in NY. I've completed the steps to fill out the necessary Schedule G-L form to claim my resident credit, and FreeTaxUSA is displaying that the credit will be applied to my PA returns. I've also done my NY returns with FreeTaxUSA. However, I know that in order to receive the credit, I need to submit my NY income tax return and W2s filed with NY alongside my PA-40. Is this something that FreeTaxUSA will do automatically? If not, how do I go about submitting these forms?

    Hi wowthanks,

If you e-file your return, our software should automatically transmit that required NY state return to PA, along with your PA-40. If anything else is needed after your return has been e-filed, you'll find information about that on the last screen under the "Final Steps" tab.

If you mail your PA return, you can include a copy of the NY return when you mail your PA return.

    Hi all,

I live in PA but earned a bit of income in IL. Submitted a nonresident IL return and my PA return includes a Schedule G-L.

I just filed with FreeTaxUSA and the "last steps" page is telling me I need to mail the Schedule G-L and the IL return to the PA department of revenue. Does FreeTaxUSA not do that electronically?

    Thanks!

    Hi denverchickennuggets,

You have a valid question. Our software complies with requirements from each state. I looked at this alert. It comes from the PA E-file division. It isn't our requirement

Follow the instruction we provided precisely and mail in the out-of-state return with the PA Form G-L so you can receive your credit.

I live in Pennsylvania but worked in New Jersey for the summer of 2024. I filed as Non-resident in New Jersey where New Jersey state tax was deducted in the amount of $74.00 and I was refunded the monies. I also filed in Pennsylvania for the state income tax including Form Pa Schedule G-L and paid Pennsylvania tax due of $70.00 having credit for the $74.00 paid to New Jersey. I have received a letter from Pennsylvania stating I owe another $74.00 to the state.

Since I included the PA Form G-L should I be paying the $74.00 to PA?

    Hi wowthanks,

How much tax did you pay to NJ? If you got a refund for NJ, then PA may have recalculated the credit for taxes paid to NJ and sent you a tax due notice.

I suggest that you sign into your FreeTaxUSA account and contact support so a support specialist can take a look at your account and state returns.
