Considering getting a PTIN (not an EFIN)

Am I able to do returns for other people for pay if I have just a PTIN? If so are there any restrictions as to how many returns I can use this software to process?

Hi MikeKathy1169, thanks for joining our Community and writing in.

    Your question has two parts.

First, the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) gives you the guidance and rules you need to know and understand in Circular 230 for preparing tax returns and getting paid. I recommend you read and understand that.

See this thread here for more information.

In FreeTaxUSA software, you can prepare up to five returns with the same email and phone number if you don't enter paid preparer information. You can only transmit a tax return on behalf of others if you have an EFIN. I strongly recommend getting an EFIN if you are preparing and filing returns for others.
