I recently filed an amended return and was charged even though I wasn't able to file electronically and had to mail it in. That doesn't seem right, how do I get a refund?

    Hi Alexa,

Like hrmbassociate mentioned, FreeTaxUSA charges for the preparation of amended returns; there is no filing fee. The price is the same regardless of whether you are eligible for e-file or need to file by mail.

With that being said, it's important to note that the IRS e-file system is currently shut down as they prepare to start accepting 2025 tax returns on January 26th. That could be why you were directed to mail your amended return. It's possible that e-file will be an option for your amended return on January 26th (if you haven't already mailed it). Just keep in mind that the IRS only accepts certain prior year returns through e-file, and they require you to have an IP PIN.

Please reach out to our Customer Support team so they can look at your account to see if you'd be eligible for e-file.

That fee is usually for preparing the amended return, not for e-filing it. The IRS won’t refund it, but you can try contacting the tax software’s support, sometimes they’ll give a courtesy refund if you ask.
