Michigan taxes
Has anyone filed their taxes through FreeTaxUSA and discovered that they won’t send over the return due to the home heating credit form? I filed my taxes on Friday. My federal was accepted on Friday; however, they’re still delaying my state return due to this form, and I find that kind of odd considering the others have this form. Michigan started accepting it. I haven’t had any luck with it. Nobody knows what’s going on. They’re telling me that my return was sent when it wasn’t, and I’m just frustrated at this point, so I would like to know if anyone else has had this issue. I really don’t have to spend additional money to re-file somewhere else when I’ve already paid to file here. However, it just isn’t good at this point with FreeTaxUSA.

Hello Irritated96,
I understand your frustration with the Michigan return delay. The state of Michigan is currently finalizing the Home Heating Credit for this tax year. Once Michigan provides us with the finalized form, we'll complete the e-filing process for your state return.
We are hopeful that this will be completed by the end of the week. Please feel free to reach out to our Support Team inside the account with additional questions.0 -
I just spoke to a rep from the state of MI and was told that all the percentages have been finalized and that she didn't understand why this was happening. 1/28/26

Hi, I'm in the same situation. I actually called MI Dept of Treasury and spoke with an agent who told me she couldn't understand why they're holding this up as all percentages have been calculated. I'd call someone at FreeTaxUSA but in order to speak to someone I need to upgrade (pay $). That doesn't seem right. I even asked if I could just delete the credit so it would get submitted. They said no. It's been filed (it hasn't) and I can't amend it. So it's sitting there in limbo and there's not a thing we can do about it and we I just get the same email response "It's not ready yet." But according to the actual STATE TREASURY DEPT it is.

I spoke with someone at the other day via the chat and I was getting into an argument with them because I didn’t understand what was going on. They kept giving me the runaround telling saying that it was Michigan that was holding everything up in is them holding everything up free tax. USA has been a joke this year. And I tried to file with somebody else but because they need my federal return I was unable to do so using a different software so I have no choice but to continue to wait on free tax USA I am beyond frustrated.

Just got this in response to my email (the only way to contact them for free)
I understand the frustration with any delays. Michigan was later than usual to release final numbers for the Home Heating Credit. Your return with the Home Heating Credits should be submitted at the end of the week, we are anticipating January 30th for this.So reading between the lines, it seems like they have released the %'s. Treasury agent said she thought it might be an issue with FreeTax updating their software, because it was finalized on their end.

That is crazy. I personally feel like they need to be reported to the IRSf they don’t release the returns by the end of the month. This is ridiculous. There’s no reason why anybody should have to be forced to wait on them for something that has already been resolved within the state, and then for there to be so many different answers from so many different rerepresentatives,nd them not wanting to take accountability for their mistake is ridiculous. I’ve been using them for the past two yeyears,nd I actually enjoyed the sosoftware;owever, this year they’re making me think twice. I think I’ll go back to TurboTax next year cabecausehis is crazy.

100% Or at the very least give some advice about potential delays when filing your home heating credit WITH your state return. You can file them stand alone. They don't have to be filed with your state return. That at least would let you know in advance how to move forward.

I agree. Hopefully we know something soon this is crazy

It is them, not the state. I just got this back from them re: my question about the delay being on their end due to updating their software. Their banner makes it look like it's a state issue when it's THEIR issue. I told them they should change it to say what it actually is:
" Once Michigan finalized the Home Heating Credit numbers on their end, we then began the process of updating our software to incorporate those final figures.
We're working to have this completed so you can file by January 30th. This isn't unusual - it's just the timing of when states finalize certain credits and when software updates can be fully implemented and tested."
Next year, I'm not filing the credit with my return. This isn't the first time there's been a delay and it just slows your refund down. You can file it stand alone.

I completely understand where you’re coming from. I’m so frustrated. This is infuriating. Then I feel like the representatives are so unprofessional. They get mad when you try to ask for answers. One of the representatives refunded me my money however I still have to file with them because I did my federal taxes with them. I can’t go somewhere else and do just my state because the need the federal to go off of. I attempted to do that the other day and it was automatically denied so now I’m in a tight spot

any update?

Nothing so far. They said, yesterday, they HOPED to have their software updated by the 30th. Problem is instead of being at the head of the line we're not back in the pack. BECAUSE they couldn't get their **** together. Probably last time I'll file with them. Their website still says the delay is caused by the state of MI. That's a lie. They admitted it yesterday. I said "Change the banner then." Sure. they'll get right on it.

I’m looking into filling through the Michigan treasury account right now I’m trying to navigate their software to hopefully get this taken care of I’m tired of waiting on freetaxusa

I would advise against that. Per the state of Michigan they said if you file it through them and then free tax USA files it tomorrow and they'll probably hold your refund up even more. The rep from treasury said they'd probably have to send you a letter to verify because there's so much fraud so just hold off I'm impatient too but don't make it worse

I just checked the website and that message is no longer on my account. I’m not sure if they sent them over or what you should look at your account and see I did reach out to customer support so we shall see.

It was there but after I deleted the cookies, and signed back in, it was gone, so fingers crosses they've fixed it.

I hope so good luck I’ll keep you posted on if it’s sent out and once they respond back in the chat

We'll know when they send us a "State of MI has accepted your return" email or text. Let me know when you get yours. Good talking to you. Hope the **** refunds get processed fast.

Hey folks, be reasonable! If MI (or anyone else) is late issuing necessary information no tax service is able to update their software until that is received. There is then inevitably some time period where the software has to be updated and tested. Frustrating, yes. I have had the same experience with other providers in previous years. I moved from one because one of their federal forms didn't work, and still doesn't.

It wasn't the state of MI. It was FreeTaxUSA. I spoke to the MI Dept of Treasury a few days ago and was told the %'s had been set a week ago. FreeTaxUSA agreed that was true and it was an issue of updating their software. No one else I know who uses different tax software ran into this. So I am reasonable. They were lying on their site when they blamed the state for the holdup

my state was just accepted

Mine, too. Hallelujah

Yeah, you’re definitely not alone, this has been happening to a lot of Michigan filers this year. Usually it’s just FreeTaxUSA waiting for the state to fully open or update that specific credit form, even if Michigan says they’re accepting returns. It’s super annoying, but most of the time it eventually clears and gets transmitted without you needing to refile or pay again. I’d give it a bit more time and keep an eye on the status before jumping ship.
