Hi. I've read that FreeTaxUSA does not allow choosing sections to work on before their section order is followed. I understand this, but I'm a retired CPA and would like to work on deductions because I won't have all of my income info before the end of this month. I do have about 85% of my deduction info now. I have completed the personal info section. I'm a TurboTax escapee and am used to skipping around on my tax forms. Is there anyway that I can do that with FreeTax?

    Hi Tio5ant,

Great question! Yes, you can definitely start working on your deductions now without entering all of your income information first. Any deduction fields that rely on income details may not populate correctly yet, but you can easily update those once your income is entered.

Since you’ve already completed the Personal Info section, you can click through the income screens without entering any data. This will let you move past those sections and access the deductions area to begin entering the information you have. You can return to the income sections later when you receive the remaining documents.

Thanks for this valuable info, Austyn. I'm a newbie to FreeTaxUSA. I can already see that your customer support is far superior to TurboTax.

This post is a general FYI……I've started my return and am very impressed with FREETAXUSA! This software is a lot easier to use than the previous tax prep software that I had been using for many years. Also the product support is excellent by comparison also. If you're trying to decide on a tax prep product, this is the one to use.

I live in CA and our itemized deductions are more than CA's standard deduction. I did find out how to enter my itemized deductions. I needed them for our state income tax return. It's a pain to have to do this, but it does make a big difference in our CA taxable income. I did notice that there is no separate item in the taxes section for real property taxes, but there is one for personal property taxes. I did find a box at the end of the taxes section to enter the amount a description for the real property taxes. I suggest you add a box specifically for this item because it's common in all states if you own property such as your home. Just saying…..
