I am using the software to prepare my 2022 and 2023 tax return. FreetaxUSA is not giving me the option of selecting a Self-Select pin. They are requiring that I get a pin from the IRS. Any suggestions when I get to the final stages of filing my return where I can select the Self select pin?

Self-select means you make it up yourself. It's a FIVE-digit PIN. You don't get anything from the IRS; you make up a 5-digit number.

The kind of PIN the IRS assigns you is for Identity Protection (IP PIN) and is SIX digits You don't need this unless you requested it and the IRS sent you a letter in January with your PIN.

Can you explain what the Self-Select PIN is? I have a note in my Word file that calls this "Talk to IRS PIN" (and yes, I know this is NOT the IP PIN)>

See my previous response. It's just a 5-digit number you make up so you can e-file your return. That's it.

OK. I'm not sure how I had something showing "Talk to IRS" (I keep a Word doc with all websites I have logins, the Username, and the Passwords for each. If there are "secret questions" I enter the answers onto that doc, as well.

    Hello everyone,

A self-select PIN is a 5 digit PIN you choose at the end of your filing for the year so you can e-file the following year using the PIN instead of the AGI if you would like. This only apply for current year tax returns. Our software will not ask you about a self-select PIN for prior year returns.

An Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a 6 digit PIN that the IRS sends to you each year. You will want to use it on your tax return and you will not be able to e-file without it. A newer feature is that you can now e-file prior year returns (back to 2023) if you have an IP PIN.
