State Disability Insurance Question
Box 19 of my W-2 is labelled "Local income tax." Box 20 is labelled "Locality name" and contains "CA-SDI."
On separate pages, FreeTaxUSA asks me to enter:
+ Box 19 - Local Income Tax:
+ If any State Disability Insurance (SDI) was withheld from your wages and is shown in Box 19 of this W-2, enter the amount:
Based on the labels, I'm confused as to whether Box 19 is SDI or not. Is it possible for the value in Box 19 to be both local income tax and SDI?
Any help on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

Hello gatoradeacademic,
I can understand how that would be confusing. In most cases, box 19 would be used for your local taxes, but some states like CA do use it to report the SDI. Since it says CA-SDI, I would say that it is SDI and not a local tax.
You can read more about it here on our community pages as well.

California SDI is deductible as a state and local tax on Schedule A (itemized deductions), but it's not state income tax withheld. It should be in Box 14 of your W-2.
