How do I file for my deceased mother?

My father passed away 3 years ago. When he passed, we filed a joint return for he and my mother and listed him as deceased. In January 2026, my mother passed away. She was retired and her only income was social security, my fathers pension and interest from bank accounts.

I know I need to file her 2025 return but do i need to apply for an EIN? I thought i only needed to file a 1040 EZ and list her as deceased.

Will I need to file for her for 2026? She passed in January 2026 and made less than $5000.

    Hello AZjim,

The IRS does not use Form 1040 EZ anymore. And you do not need an EIN to file her return. As her executor, you can prepare her 2025 return. Also, see the MISC menu if you need to collect a refund in your name.

Since her income in 2026 may be below the filing threshold, you may not need to file a return. However, you may want to if she is due a refund for any taxes withheld.

    Hi @Turk

Yes FreeTaxUSA supports form 1310. See our list of supported tax forms. To find form 1310, look under "Federal Forms we File" and it should be listed there.
