I made a mistake and did not check the box about if someone else can claim you as a dependent, so I need to file an amended return. Any idea when that will be available?

Thank you!

    Hello Dane,

Amendments are available now on FreeTaxUSA. There are a handful of states that are not ready yet, but they should be available soon. If you belong to one of those states, the software will not allow you to amend since amending in our software amends both your federal and state return at the same time.

To amend, click on Account and select Amend Tax Return from the drop down menu.

One thing to keep in mind. If a parent is claiming you, their return will continue to get rejected by the IRS even weeks after your amendment is accepted and processed. They will need to mail in their return.

I was able to e-file my amended return today and it was accepted by IRS. However, my parents return is still getting rejected, so Kiarab suggested that they mail in their return. Is that still the best method?

Hello Dane! Yes, mailing may still be the best option for your parents at this point. Even though your amended return has been accepted, it can take the IRS 8-16 weeks to fully process it in their system. Until that processing is complete, your parents' e-filed return will continue to be rejected because the IRS system still shows the original filing information.

By mailing their return, your parents can get it submitted right away without waiting for the amendment to fully process. When they mail it, they can include a brief note explaining that you filed an amended return to indicate that you can be claimed as a dependent, which should help clarify the situation for the IRS.
