MFJ with NRA spouse

Hi folks,

I've read a few articles and questions on this site, and it's been really helpful.

I am a US Citizen, and my wife was a non-resident alien in 2025.
She

  • Has no foreign assets or income
  • Has an SSN
  • Is exempt from the substantial presence test (F-1 Visa)

My wife did not withhold any SS or Medicare money - those boxes are blank on her W2.

Does FreeTaxUSA allow me to file jointly with a NRA spouse who has a SSN and no foreign income? We believe she would need to file a Form 8843 to declare her income exempt - does FreeTaxUSA accommodate this?

Thanks,

Saurabh

    Hello Saurabh,

I'm glad our articles and discussions have been helpful for you.

We currently do not support Form 8843, Statement for Exempt Individuals and Individuals With a Medical Condition. So if you need this form in order to file jointly, we will not be able to accommodate you this year.
