Federal Accepted, State Rejected

This is my first time filing taxes.
My federal returns were accepted, but my state returns were rejected.
I confirmed that this was due to a small typo in the W-2 form.
Nothing else (related to the federal returns) is incorrect.
However, because my federal returns were accepted, I cannot edit the W2, only Box 16 (I want to edit Box 17).
Should I opt to mail my state returns? Would anything change if the CORRECT state withholdings were $0 (as written on my actual W-2). Do I need to file a 1040-X? Is there a limit on how many times I can refile from scratch?
Thank you.

Hello,
When this happens, you will need to mail your tax return since there is no way to only update box 18 of your W-2 when your federal return has been accepted.0
