Unclear how to file this year

Allot of things happened this year.

My husband came to America and started working as a contractor for a courier company. He has a SS. Do I need to obtain an EIN# and should we file jointly? Also, can I file head of household since he didn't make enough money?

Also, I sold my house in New Jersey and bought a new house in North Carolina, under my name only.

Thanks

He only needs an EIN# if he has employees. Otherwise a SSN is fine to file his taxes.

If you are married on December 31, 2024, you have two options for filing status. 1. Married Filing Joint or Married Filing Separately.

Generally, Married Filing Joint is the best filing status. See this link for Filing Status at the IRS.

If you get a 1099-S for the sale of the house, see the Sale of Main Home page. Otherwise, you just need your 1098 to report the Mortgage Interest as an Itemized Deduction.
