my husband passed away in August. His only income was Social Security. How do I handle it on my taxes this year?

    Hi,

When your spouse passes, you may still file a Married Filing jointly and answer the questions on his personal page and answer YES that he is deceased and enter the date of death. Enter his Social Security Benefits and your income as well.

Otherwise, you can file as Married Filing Separately.

Since your husband was alive in 2024 he will be an active tax-payer. Most people would continue to file Jointly for 2024 unless you remarried in 2024. In 2025 you file single, unless you remarry in 2025.

If you have dependent children to claim in 2025 and 2026 you could file as a Qualified Widower.
