Does a minor need to file state and/or federal taxes?
My son started working and his pay checks are full pay with nothing taken out. Uncertain if minors need to file taxes,or if there is a specific threshold? State is MA.

A minor who may be claimed as a dependent generally is required to file a tax return once their income exceeds the standard deduction. For 2024, the standard deduction is $14,600.
For example: a 17 year old works after school and earns $10,000. Since this is less than the standard deduction, he would not owe in taxes. If she had taxes withheld, he would want to file a return to get those taxes back as a refund.
If he earned more than $14,600 but did not have taxes withheld, then he would need to file and pay the taxes due.
If the minor has any unearned income, then the rules for filing are a bit different.

For MA, the rules are a bit different. For 2024, if you have gross income of more than $8,000, then you are required to file the state return.
