Do I file as married or single this year?

My boyfriend and I decided to get married this year in September. We got our license and paid for everything. My husband sadly passed away in November. I am not sure if I need to file as married filing separately or if I can file as single for this year.

    I'm so sorry for your loss. The IRS considers you married for the whole year if you were married during the year. You can also report on your tax return that your spouse passed away. So, your options if your spouse passed away in 2024 are married filing jointly or married filing separately.
