Refund
I accidentally put a 2022 W-2 on my 2023 tax return. When I received a letter from the IRS stating that they were reviewing my return and I had not yet received my refund, I assumed that they would see the mistake, revise it, and then send me my adjusted refund, but they did not and when I called and finally spoke with someone, they just said they had the right to continue to review. Since then, I filed my own amendment 1040x despite not having received my return, and even paid what they claimed I owed (I believe it to be the difference between what I would have received and what I should receive now). I am concerned however, that I will not get my refund and I need it to live right now. What can I do?

Hi Redhead!
Typically when an amendment is filed it shows the changes and the amount of refund or balance due is the difference between the original received and any changes. On the amendment in our software there is a spot to include what was received, which it sounds like would be $0. So the refund change would be the difference of the original and the new changes.
At this time, if you've filed the amendment to show the changes the best thing to do is wait. We recommend going to the following IRS links to be up to date on the most recent status they have of your refund.

Hi RedHead,
Thanks for joining in to our live event today.
The IRS won't correct a 2022 Form W-2 entered on your 2023 tax return. You'd need to amend that on your own which sounds like you did.
A letter from the IRS stating they were reviewing your return could be many different things and not at all related to the W-2 issue.
The upshot however is to request help from the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) if the issue has not yet been resolved and/or you're unable to wait for it to be resolved. You may or may or may not meet TAS criteria for assistance.
Here's the link to the 911 Form and the TAS website:
