Hello Louise_0913,
The only thing you need to do differently is to select "Yes" to the question "Has this person passed away before the filing of this tax return?"
Then you will need to input the Date of Death. Aside from that, you will just need to report any income that was earned before the passing.
Here is an IRS page that can help with information for filing for someone who has passed away:

You can indicate your father's passing as part of the 2024 tax return.
In the "PERSONAL" menu > "Taxpayer information" screen, at the bottom of the screen there's a question: Has this person passed away before the filing of this tax return?" You can indicate the date and this will be printed on the return and submitted to the IRS.

Mom passed away July 2025. She had a Qualified LTC policy that paid the nursing home directly. FreeTaxUSA is stating that I have to send a paper copy to the IRS instead of efiling. Why can't efile for my dead mom?

Hello ElenaDaughter,
Let me explain. When a person passes away, their SSN can be used to file fraudulent returns. So, the IRS gets information from the Social Security Administration and locks the SSN and this prevents deceased taxpayer returns from being e-filed. You will need to mail your mother's final return.0
