Amending my 2023 tax return (Said I lived in New Jersey, but I lived in New York)
I have a complicated tax situation I was hoping I could get advice on. I filed my 2023 taxes saying I live in New Jersey. I submitted a federal tax return as well as state returns for New Jersey and New York (because I worked in New York). I made two mistakes in this return.
First, I stated I lived in New Jersey, but I only stayed there for half of the year - I moved to New York in July to begin working.
Second, I claimed that I paid taxes to New Jersey from my paycheck withholdings and should be owed by them. However, I paid taxes to New York from my paycheck withholdings and should be owed by the New York Department instead of New Jersey.
How do I go about explaining this in my amended tax return to get what I am owed?

TaxMaster69,
That is a great question!
To confirm, it sounds like you filed a full-year resident NJ return and a non-resident NY return. Is that correct?
If so, amending a state tax return to change residency can be tricky given the differences in the returns. Keep in mind that amending a state return with FreeTaxUSA to change state residency is not supported.
Many times, the state will just want you to file the correct tax form and they will reconcile any differences on their end.
I'd recommend that you reach out directly to NJ and NYS to explain your situation and ask how they'd like you to resolve the issue.
