Taxes for a new state
I have been paying taxes in Washington DC and forgot to move my state taxes over to Maryland when I moved. Is there a way to get the money back from DC to pay Maryland?

Hi Aorte021,
Thanks for the question.
There is not a way to direct the refund from one state to go to another state automatically. You would need to get the refund from one state and then use that to pay the other state.
If you lived in two states part of the year, when you file your taxes you will file a return in each state, as a part year resident. You will be asked the dates you lived in each state and what state you were in when the income was earned. The taxes due to each state will be calculated based on that. If all of your withholdings come from DC and none from Maryland then likely you will receive a refund from DC and have a balance due to Maryland. As long as you file in time to get the refund back from DC before the taxes are due to Maryland then you can use that refund money to pay Maryland.
