Past year taxes - state vs federal

I'm filing missed returns for 2021. The state (Ohio) says they can't accept it until the federal 2021 has been acknowledged. I'm not impatient for a refund, but I'd like the acknowledgement so I can move forward on state. Is there a way to get that?

    Hello!

In order for the state to process your return, you will have to submit the federal return for that year. Until the IRS has processed your federal return, the state will not be able to process your return. If you have submitted your federal return - and you are waiting for that to be processed, you can check the status of your return at the IRS link below.

That page says "The information you entered doesn't match our records", and it's not clear whether that means they haven't processed it yet, or there is an actual discrepancy.

Typically, if you are seeing a message from the IRS that the information you entered does not match their records than there is some discrepancy between the information reported on your return and the information the IRS has. This would explain why your federal return has not yet been processed. The message may include more information regarding what information does not match - it would be recommended for you to review the return to confirm accuracy and re-submit your federal return.

Past years have to be done by mail, which means 4-8 weeks in between - and with no idea of what the discrepancy might be, I'd just be sending the same information again, and repeating the cycle in two months.

It's possible there isn't a discrepancy. The IRS is known for not being the greatest when it comes to updating their system, especially when it comes to mailed returns.

We unfortunately don't receive any updates regarding mailed returns. The only thing I can recommend is to continue checking https://www.irs.gov/wheres-my-refund . You can also try resubmitting your state return to see if the state has received your federal return info and the IRS just isn't showing the updates.

You can also try calling the IRS directly to get more information. You can reach them here:

    1 (800) 829-1040

As mentioned previously, resubmitting your 2021 federal return can ensure that the IRS has your return.
