My state won't communicate

Idid my deceased mother's taxes, and had no issues with the federal return. I received the funds within a couple of weeks.

My state, Michigan, is a completely different story. They held the return without letting me know why. They also said they won't communicate with me because I'm not the tax payer. They say I need a court probate order. We didn't have anything to do with probate as everything was set up before my mother died. This refund is over 2k. So story whatever I need to do. But they are extremely difficult to work with. They won't give me any information at all.

    I am sorry this process has been difficult. Without a probate legal documents you will need other proof to show you are the rightful recipient. This is generally done through court processes that will provide certification that you can claim the refund. If there are concerns about this step, consulting an estate attorney may be helpful. After this documentation is provided, you should also file MI-1310 Claim for Refund Due a Deceased Taxpayer which will petition for you to claim the refund on the taxpayer's behalf.
