Moving expenses State deduction
My husband is active duty and had a duty station change in March from Ga to Sc. For the state returns, SC says we can deduct expenses if moving into the state. GA’s return just asks for moving expenses. Can I deduct for both states? Seems like I would be double dipping.
Thank you

Hi Nweidle!
You can deduct moving expenses on your federal return when you are you a member of the Armed Forces on active duty, and due to a military order, moved because of a permanent change in station. In researching South Carolina & Georgia deductions, I don't see a specific moving expense deduction that either state offers. When preparing your return, you can simply enter your moving expenses in the federal portion of your return and that will carry over to your state return.

there is a moving expense question in both state returns. At least in the 2023 returns. The 2024 returns aren’t available yet.

You wouldn't be double dipping because you have two different taxes against which to offset income, but thanks for being conscientious. You are right, most state are not yet available. I'll take a look at 2023 to see what you're referring to.

I've set up test accounts for both South Carolina and Georgia and didn't see any place for input to be entered on those states' 2023 pages in our software. Any eligible moving expenses would be automatically carried over to the respective state returns.
If you feel as though there's something I've missed please point me to the part to which you're referring.
We value long-standing customers such as you and thank for your continued patronage. -
I’m looking at the 2023 state returns for both states and in the sections “Adjustments”, they both ask about any moving expenses. The SC one specifically says enter only the amounts if you moved into SC. I wish I could paste a picture of both pages.

Thanks for the reply. I think I know what you're referring to and suspect that the state amounts will automatically populate I'm going to go back to the test accounts to confirm.
Thanks for your patience. -
thank you. They didn’t automatically populate for me, I had to enter the amounts. I created a test account to play with as if I was doing my 2024 state return but it was of course using 2023 return.

Thanks. Let me state that setting up test accounts is a good idea.
Please bear with me but how were you able enter the amounts? I'm assuming that you're referring to the state pages. -
yes, was using a test 2023 account.
