edited December 2024 in Filing my taxes

Hello, I haven't filed 2023 taxes yet due to many many reasons. My husband passed a few months ago and I am now reconciling financial documents. My question is can I still file my 2023 taxes using free tax usa in dec 2024?

    Hi Joanna23!

Yes! You can still file your 2023 return using our software. However, if you are wanting to file during the month of December, you will need to file by mail. The IRS has currently shut down their e-filing system in preparation for the upcoming tax season.

If you would like to e-file your return, you can do so come January as long as you have an IP PIN. You can recover/request your IP PIN here:

I am the POA for my brother in law and we never filed 2023 taxes because we didn't have W2's, 1099's etc. I have everything for 2024, but am still missing missing information to file his 2023 taxes. Should I file the 2024 and then the 2023 or wait until the 2023 information arrives? I live in another state and am dependent on someone else to tell me if the information has been received in the mail.

    Thank you for this information.

You can definitely file your 2024 return with the information that you have. It is totally okay to file your 2024 return first before filing 2023.

The timeline for filing an original 2023 tax return for a refund is April 15, 2027, so you have a lot of time to get the information and file it later than your 2024 return.
