Does nontaxable regular Social Security count towards MAGI for IRMAA purposes?

I believe it does not.

    Hello!

The Social Security Administration website states the following are included in the MAGI for IRMAA

    • the beneficiary’s adjusted gross income (AGI) (found on line 11 of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax filing form 1040), plus
    • tax-exempt interest income (line 2a of IRS Form 1040).

Since the nontaxable portion of the social security would typically not be included on line 11 of a tax return, this will generally not be included in the MAGI for IRMAA.

The following link has a bit more information about the MAGI

I'm getting conflicting information regarding MAGI. I just finished my 2024 taxes on H & R Block and Form 8962 calculates and lists my MAGI which includes the portion of my SSI that is not taxed. Even the SSI handbook (although revised 2008) and almost all google sites addressing this subject state that MAGI only includes AGI plus tax-exempt interest. Did this just change?

There are different definitions of MAGI for different purposes. For what situation are you calculating MAGI?
