My parent is in a nursing homein MN. What do I have to do so I can fill out her forms and file both state and federal tax for her? I have a state POA document for her

    Hello B54321,

    Not much needs to be done to file her tax returns, but you will need a POA to talk to the IRS in the even you need to speak to them about the return.

    Make sure you have all her income documents. Such as 1099s and any documents to itemized her medical and long-term care expenses along with any other itemized deductions. The standard deduction may be the better option, but her medical expenses may be high enough that itemized deduction may be the best option.

    You will need a copy of her prior year tax return with the AGI so you can e-file her return. Start an account on FreeTaxUSA for her and enter all her information. You should fill out the 3rd party designee page on the Misc menu so you can talk to the IRS. Also, you should fill out a Form 2848: POA for the IRS.
