2023 Federal Income Tax
I am due a federal refund of $1389 for taxes withheld. How much longer should I have to wail for the refund? I received my two state refunds almost as soon as I filed. I may not be able to use the free tax system this year if I can't get my refund. I do not have a current Driver's License since it expired while I was in the hospital for two months. My leg **** did not heal as it should have & the rod they put in made my right foot turn out about 90 degrees so the doctor's won't allow me to drive. I see no need for a license now.

Hi Kareron,
Thanks for writing in with you question. Sorry there's been a delay in getting your refund from the IRS. I know how frustrating that can be.
Assuming your return was e-filed and accepted, you'd receive an acceptance notification via email, plus FreeTaxUSA also notifies you when accepted. After that, the IRS must process the return.
The IRS automatically takes longer to process tax returns with certain credits such as Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Credit.
You can check with the IRS on the status of your tax return using "Where's My Refund?" Is it still Pending? Or is it Processed?
If processed, and it's been greater than six months, you may need to call 1-800-829-1040 to get more information. Be prepared to be on hold. You might be able to find out more information by calling 1-800-829-4477. This is only for current year tax returns. In some instances however, assistance from the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) is needed to determine why your refund hasn't been released or what the status is of your tax return.
Sometimes there's a possibility the refund is intercepted by another federal or state agency for an outstanding balance due. Most common reasons included unpaid student loans and back child support. You can find out more here at the Treasury Offset Program.
