Can I email the IRS a letter from the Social Security Office regarding my locked SSN telling them that I am not deceased?

    Hi TriciakK,

No, you typically will not need to send a copy of that letter to the IRS.

Did you receive a CP01H notice letting you know that you filed with a locked SSN? If so, this link provides information about how to fix that. See "How can I get the account unlocked?" on that web page. It shows that you will need to send the following information to the address of the IRS campus where you filed your return:

    1. A copy of the CP01H notice
    2. A written request to unlock the account
    3. A photocopy of at least one of the following:
      • Passport
      • Driver’s license
      • Social Security card
      • Other valid U.S. federal or state government issued identification
    4. Your tax return with original signatures

I suggest keeping a copy of everything you send to the IRS. It is also typically best to send the documents using certified mail for proof of delivery.

If you did not get a CP01H notice, you typically will not need to send any information to the IRS. The IRS should get updated when the Social Security Administration unlocks your SSN.
