Tax Return Acceptance

Hey so I filed my state return and federal return about 3 days ago now and still haven't received any emails about them being accepted or rejected and on both the federal refund site and my states refund site, they haven't received them yet. Just wondering if I should just wait longer or what I should do.

I don't know about state, but the IRS e-file program doesn't officially open until January 27. The software companies hold your return in a queue until the system is open.

I honestly don't know if the date has anything to do with it because it was said the IRS wouldn't start accepting returns until 1/26/2025. However, I e-filed my taxes with TurboTax on 1/15/2025 and received my funds 1/31/2025. This year, 2026, I just e-filed my taxes with FreeTaxUSA for the first time, so for them to possibly hold your return until the IRS is open doesn't make much sense. I hope that's not the case.

JMSSGV is right in that the IRS's e-filing system doesn't officially open until the end of January. According to this link, the IRS says it will be the 26th. https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-announces-first-day-of-2026-filing-season-online-tools-and-resources-help-with-tax-filing

To help prepare for the season, the IRS does allow some software companies, like FreeTaxUSA (and based on your experience, TurboTax) to submit a small number of tax returns before the tax season starts to test their e-filing system. However, the IRS does not start processing them until the season starts for the year.

I personally use FreeTaxUSA for my own taxes and have received a refund within a week of the acceptance of the return multiple times. The speed of it depends really depends on the IRS and how they process returns.
