I used a tax preparer that I had been using for the past 3 years, But for 2023 I filed an extension and when time to file my taxes in October I paid him and sent all my documents. He said they were complete and told me my amounts for federal and state, I asked for copies and never got them. He never filed and stopped communicating. This was October/Novemer, I talked to the IRS and nothing was filed. I tried messaging him again last week and he said he had lost his phone and thought my taxes were filed. He said he would send them to me and I would need to mail them! Well he sent the federal, I messaged him and asked for the state, he said that he meant to send it to me with the federal, now I still have not received the state and there hasn’t been any more response from him! I see on the federal when I printed it out he used this sites service, is there any way I can get a copy of my state from here without him? Or what can I do?

    Hello BnBCollins

I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties you're experiencing with your tax preparer. In regards to our software, only the account holder (in this case, your tax preparer) would have direct access to the account. Here are some steps you can take to resolve the situation:

    1. Contact Your Tax Preparer Again: Try reaching out to your tax preparer one more time, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. You might want to use different methods of communication, such as email, phone, or even a certified letter, to ensure your message is received. Clearly request a copy of your state return. If you have any documentation or receipts from your tax preparer, mention these to reinforce your request.
    2. File a Complaint: If your tax preparer continues to be unresponsive, consider filing a complaint with the IRS Office of Professional Responsibility if they are a CPA, enrolled agent, or attorney. You can also contact your state's board of accountancy or other relevant professional organizations.
    3. Prepare and File Your State Return: If you cannot obtain your state return from your preparer, you may need to prepare it yourself. Since you have your federal return, you could use that and your documents to recreate the federal return on our site. Then you could proceed and prepare the state return for mailing.

If you do create an account, you will be able to contact our excellent customer service through there for additional assistance if needed. We are here to help!
