How do you know if W2 Box 19 local income tax includes SDI or FLI?

I live in NYC and am entering my W2. The software asks, "Do you have any State Disability Insurance (SDI) or Family Leave Insurance (FLI) shown in Box 14 or Box 19 of this W2?" Box 14 is blank and Box 19 has a number but is simply labeled "Local income tax."
How do I know if the local income tax includes SDI or FLI? Should I answer yes or no, and if yes, do I enter the full local income tax amount from box 19?

Hello 2wen,
In New York, State Disability Insurance (SDI) and Family Leave Insurance (FLI) are not typically included in local income tax. Box 19 on your W-2 is generally used for local income taxes, such as city or county taxes, and not for SDI or FLI.
Since Box 14 is blank and Box 19 is labeled as "Local income tax," it is unlikely that the amount in Box 19 includes SDI or FLI. Therefore, you should answer "no" to the question about having any SDI or FLI shown in Box 14 or Box 19.
If you have any doubts or need further clarification, it might be helpful to check with your employer or payroll department to confirm the details of your W-2.

Hi! I have the same question but my box 14 (other) has an amount for both NY FL & NY DI & box 19 has an amount as well
However, box 19 is labeled Local income tax - no mention of disability
Can you advise how to proceed?
Thank you😊

Hi Javier1002,
In your case, I recommend that you enter box 19 as it is and use the box 14 to answer any questions relating to Family Leave (FLI), Disability Insurance (DI), Etc.

Hi,
I have a similar question. I have NY-PFL and NY-SDI amounts in Box 14. Also, have a single amount shown in box 19 labeled Local Income Tax, which significantly greater than the amounts in Box 14. I was hoping if you would be able to advise what to enter for the field titled, "If any State Disability Insurance (SDI) was withheld from your wages and is shown in Box 19 of this W-2, enter the amount:" (Below is the link of the situation I am asking about with the box in question circled in yellow).
If I enter the full amount shown in Box 19 of the W-2 and continue, there is a yellow warning message that the amount shown is much higher than usually seen and is something that could be flagged. If you could please advise what to put in circled box in screenshot.
Thank you!

Hi Haj,
I recommend the same thin. That you enter box 19 as it is and use the box 14 to answer any questions relating to NY-PFL and NY-SDI. Box 19 is local tax in most cases. Rarely do they enter PFL and SDI in box 19, but sometime employers do, which is why we ask.

I am still confused, in the screen that asks: "Do you have any State Disability Insurance (SDI) or Family Leave Insurance (FLI) shown in Box 14 or Box 19 of this W-2?"
Do we put the amounts listed in box 14 (Other) and 19 (Local Income Tax) on THIS screen? Or does an indicator on the W2 need to be on the from listing the amount as SDI or FLI (PFL)?0 -
Hi,
Only enter the amounts listed in box 14. It is very rare that it is listed in box 19. And if it is, your W-2 will include some sort of summary or notes about it.

I also had a quick question on this section. I have two W-2s, one Box 14 lists NY-PFL and VPDI, and the other lists NY-PFL and NY-SDI. Is PFL equivalent to FLI and should be entered, and is VPDI equivalent to SDI and should be entered? Thanks!

Hello daufler,
They are very similar. PFL is Paid Family Leave and FLI is Family Leave Insurance. The first may be a payment while you were on family leave and the second, FLI, is a deduction to pay for the insurance program.
So be caution on how you report PFL. It generally is included on the W-2 and reported as Other Income as taxable non-wage income.
VDPI is Voluntary Plan for Disability Insurance and is like SDI in that they are both disability insurance. SDI is state disability insurance and is required by law whereas VDPI is voluntary.
You may want to contact Customer Support while signed into your account so they can see your account and review your situation.
When entering additional information about FLI and SDI, on the page after entering the W2, do not enter the PFL or VDPI, unless asked specially about it.

Hi, similar issue here too. I'd manually entered my W-2, then in the following "We need a little more info from your ___[employer]___ W-2", I'm getting confused on the "If any State Disability Insurance (SDI) was withheld from your wages and is shown in Box 19 of this W-2, enter the amount:" question.
My Box 14 is blank, my Box 19 has the $750, and Box 20 is labeled "SDI" (I'm in California and used to get "CA-SDI," but for me in recent years it's been "SDI"). Reading between the lines of another answer elsewhere from the FreeTaxUSA team, this $750 amount is all for SDI, but I'm seeing conflicting answers on the whole "Box 14 vs. Box 19" question in general (some even claiming that any Box 19 amounts should be entered as a Box 14 amount instead).
Am I overthinking this and I should just reenter the $750 under this "Box 19" question, even though I'd just done so on the previous page?0
