    Hello,

I am sorry to hear of the passing of your family member. You can still file with FreeTaxUSA for the deceased family member. You need to pay attention to the Personal Information at the start of the tax inputs. There is a question "Has this person passed away before the filing of this tax return?" that will allow you to input the date of death.

The tax return will post the Date of Death on the Form 1040. If needed, you may need to print a Form 1310 if there is a refund present on the filing of the tax return and you aren't a surviving spouse or court-appointed executor.

If you are not able to access the existing FreeTaxUSA account, you can create a new account and follow the advice in this note to file the return.

Input the income that was received by the person (while alive) as usual and follow the prompts for how to file as normal. The software will prompt you on any extra paperwork needed and where to send it.

This article is a resource for more information.

Why isn’t this said in the software when actually filing for a deceased loved one? At no point is it said it would need to be printed out. There’s absolutely NOTHING that prompts one to do so. It’s been hard enough to deal with my late uncle’s passing, now the IRS refund is delayed and I need that to pay off his final expenses. Not everyone just says oh well and not pay. We do. Im his sole heir, and at the very least, you should have it stated in your return process to print that form if one is not a spouse or official representative. It clearly shows that in the 1310, but not ever was I told to print it out. So, now what do I do? Do I need to amend the whole thing?

Hello Pittiemommie! I am sorry to hear of your difficulties and can understand your frustration. I am sorry if this was not clear when you filed the return. If the IRS is requesting information, you do not need to amend your return, you can simply mail the required documents to the IRS directly as indicated on your notice. As I don't have access to the account, my understanding of the situation is limited. Can you please sign in to the account and select to contact support? One of our agents would be happy to provide you with specific assistance.
